Whenever a new rule appears in Ebert's Little Movie Glossary, then the behavior that the rule cites will rarely, if ever, appear in a movie again. In fact, the reverse effect might even occur, e.g., when a closeup of a hand is shown with a finger tightening on the trigger, it will most likely be fired, surprising audiences who have grown accustomed to it not being fired. ELMG thus serves as a barometer of rules having become cliches.
